Positive outcomes at South Island lamb sales and ewe fairs

Abundant Southland feed and demand from cropping farmers boosts market

Lamb sales and ewe fairs dominated the South Island’s February livestock market.

Demand from Mid Canterbury cropping farmers, and locals seeking to make the most of Southland’s abundant feed situation kept demand for store lambs solid. Considering where the schedule is, the lambs sold well.

Annual draft ewes also sold reasonably positively, especially those with good mouths and from traditionally favoured lines. At the Lorneville two tooth fair, the top Border Romneys fetched $250.

While conditions are becoming drier, more cattle are coming into the store market, which has been reasonably strong, particularly for well-bred traditional cattle.
