Sustainability at PGG Wrightson
At PGG Wrightson we demonstrate our dedication to ‘Helping grow the country’ through our commitment to protecting our natural environment for future generations. To be ‘Leaders in the Field’ we recognise the need to balance environmental, social, and economic considerations in order to make a valuable contribution to our people, our customers, our communities and our shareholders.
PGG Wrightson recognises its responsibility to mitigate climate impacts and adapt out business model. Our Climate Transition Plan outlines a strategic pathway to low emissions future while maintaining business resilience within the changing rural landscape. The Plan recognises New Zealand’s changing climate context, changing land use trends in New Zealand, international trade context impacting export markets and outlines a range of actions to reach our operational emissions reduction target.
The agricultural and horticultural sectors are among the most vulnerable to climate-related disruptions and changing weather patterns, while also holding an important role to improve production efficiencies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. PGG Wrightson is well placed to assist its customers to address sustainability, but also to influence our suppliers to scale impacts beyond our boundaries.
Our people are at the heart of our health and wellbeing commitment, and we know the best outcomes are achieved when we focus on our people. In order to attract and retain talent against a backdrop of evolving markets and societies we ensure our People and Safety Strategy prioritises future workforce needs.
PGG Wrightson is committed to addressing sustainability across the three pillars of environment, social and governance. For more information, please see our key strategic sustainability documents below:
Environment
PGG Wrightson recognises the need to address our environmental footprint and has committed to reduce our operational (scope 1 & 2) greenhouse gas emissions profile by 30% by FY30, based on a FY21 baseline.
We undertake a comprehensive process to develop our greenhouse gas inventory every years, with regular transparent disclosures aligned to international standards:
- Greenhouse Gas Disclosure Report 2025 (covering FY25)
- Greenhouse Gas Disclosure Report 2024 (covering FY24)
- Greenhouse Gas Disclosure Report 2023 (covering FY21, FY22 & FY23)
Many of our activities are designed to meet the demand for more sustainable farming practices. As part of initiatives to help our customers to recycle farm and orchard plastics, we provide logistical support to the leading product stewardship programme Agrecovery – which collects and recycles plastic from farmers and growers throughout New Zealand.
We have also adopted Meridian’s Certified Renewable Energy throughout our network of retail stores across New Zealand. This product allows us to match our electricity consumption with an equivalent amount of electricity production from Meridian’s hydro stations or wind farms, which have been certified as producing 100% renewable electricity.
