Making it easy

Finding the right insurance can be daunting. For farms, where homes and livelihoods often crossover, it’s critical you have someone help you navigate through the types of cover, the options and making sure you only pay what you need to.

Rural policies are normally a package deal, combining covers protecting assets, liability, loss of profit/income, motor vehicle, machinery and personal home and contents.

A key consideration when it comes to purchasing insurance is having the right cover for your farm’s operations, for instance policies will normally exclude any cover relating to the operation of an air strip. Additional revenue streams such as farm stay, farm glamping, public walking tracks – all these need careful consideration when arranging your insurance cover. Also, ensuring you have enough cover; an adequate sum insured to protect you for future losses.

In addition, you need to consider protecting you. What happens if you become ill or have an accident and are unable to work the farm for some time? Arranging insurance to protect not just you and your income but your livelihood and your family are paramount.

A broker’s role is to understand your unique risk profile; your farming operation, location and what you do to reduce losses. Brokers design a programme that fits you and your operation – sometimes this necessitates negotiating policy coverage as unique as your farm. The broker will then look to market this programme to insurers and would recommend placement based on the best cover for you at the best price.

In the past few years the insurance sector has been heavily impacted by earthquake and weather events, and rural properties have been significantly affected by this. Added to this are supply chain issues impacting costs of materials and labour availability. As a result claims costs continue to increase.

There’s never been a more critical time to seek out the advice of a broker.
