Wool Report: Strong sales, educational initiatives, and shearing triumphs

In a recent interview with Rowena Duncum from The Country, Jason Everson from PGG Wrightson Wool shared insights into the current state of the wool market, along with notable industry developments.

 Market Resilience

Everson began by discussing the recent South Island wool sale, which featured the largest sale of the season, comprising approximately 11,000 bales of crossbred fleece and lambswool. Despite the substantial volume, all wool types held up well in terms of pricing, defying expectations of potential declines at such large sales.

Notably, Beef & Lamb's export stamps, for the eight months year to date, revealed a 10.6% increase in wool export volumes compared to the previous year. This uptick in demand from major markets such as China, India, UK, Nepal, and Lithuania have contributed to slightly higher prices compared to last year, indicating positive market trends that are hopeful to persist.

Educational Initiatives

Everson also highlighted PGG Wrightson Wool's recent engagement with young minds in the agricultural sector. The Christchurch Wool Store hosted around 100 students from Lincoln University, providing them with a comprehensive tour and insights into the wool supply chain, from farm to market. This initiative not only educates future industry leaders but also fosters a deeper understanding of the wool sector's importance and potential opportunities.

Shearing Excellence

The interview also celebrated the remarkable achievement of Nathan Stratford, who won the PGG Wrightson/Vetmed National Shearing Circuit for the third time. Everson commended Stratford's exceptional skills and fitness required for shearing, emphasising the physically demanding nature of the sport. PGG Wrightson Wool is organising a celebration in Stratford's hometown of Invercargill to honour his achievement and present him with the keys to a brand-new Hyundai Santa Fe, which he will drive for the next 12 months. This recognition underscores the company's support for the shearing community and its commitment to acknowledging excellence within the industry.
