Safer Rides Save Lives

Alongside Farm Without Harm by Safer Farms, Rabobank, ANZCO, LIC and Craigmore, we’re supporting the Safer Rides campaign, encouraging farmers to install crush protection devices (CPDs) on their quad bikes.

CPDs make quad bikes safer in the event of a rollover by spreading the weight of the bike and either creating space for survival or allowing the bike to roll off the occupant.

From 2019 to 2023, there were 22 quad bike-related fatalities in New Zealand, most involving rollovers and steep grades.  That’s 22 too many, which is why we were more than happy to donate funds to the Safer Rides initiative, allowing farmers to save up to 75% off crush protection devices from Trax Equipment and Quadbar.

Safer Rides Start Here

The past year has been the deadliest yet for quad bike accidents in New Zealand, signalling a need for the industry to come together and support on-farm safety, particularly around quad bike use.

Safer Rides provides farmers who sign up with a $400 voucher to go towards a CPD from retailers Trax Equipment or QuadBar. Trax Equipment and Quadbar have offered a further 15% off the purchase, which means farmers could save up to 75% of the cost, depending on the model of CPD. Although what farmers could be saving is so much more, reducing the financial barriers is a practical way that Safer Rides aims to promote on-farm safety.

Wairarapa farmer and Farm Without Harm ambassador Lindy Nelson, said Safer Rides reduces the cost of making quad bikes safer, with the aim of urgently addressing the high number of fatalities on farms.

“Quad bikes can be great workhorses for farmers so making sure existing ones are made safer is one of the areas we are addressing. We’re focusing on CPDs right now as farmers and members have told us they work and have saved lives.

“We know farmers are under financial pressure right now. This is practical support that means cost shouldn’t get in the way of safety.”

What do Crush Protection Devices do?

Farmers have multiple options when it comes to CPDs, which are designed to help the bike rollover rather than crush the driver as well as creating space so they can get free from an overturned bike.

There are four CPD products available through the Safer Rides initiative. These are the QuadBar Original ($635) and Quadbar flexibar ($780) from Quadbar, and the QuadGuard ($838) and Lifeguard ($1724) from Trax Equipment

What is Farm Without Harm?

Farm Without Harm is presented by Safer Farms, and is a 6-year action plan to reduce accidents and fatalities on New Zealand farms. It encourages a widespread culture change around on-farm safety, supports people with information and skills to make safer choices on farm and supports the sector to redesign preventable harm out of farming products and systems altogether. Farmers and industry organisations are encouraged to join the movement by pledging a commitment to reducing harm in the food and fibre industry and use their influence to affect change.

It also provides an ever-growing library of resources to help farmers have conversations and prepare for safety on farm, access guides on the best vehicles for the job and videos from survivors of farm accidents and near misses.

Here's how to sign up for a Safer Farms voucher
