The Relaxed Farmer: The Wisdom of Unwinding

University of Waikato Master’s student, Cathleen Schriber-Hannah, is on a mission to understand how the coping strategies and unwinding activities of NZ farmers impact stress and wellbeing.

Growing up on her parent’s farm in Te Aroha, Cathleen knows firsthand the impact that farmer wellbeing can have on the running of the farm. She says, “Farmers have a wealth of knowledge which many of us can learn from. I aim to understand how coping strategies and unwinding activities affect wellbeing and stress.”

As part of her Master’s thesis, Cathleen is seeking the support of NZ farmers to complete a 30 minute confidential and anonymous survey to help inform suggestions and resources to overcome stress.

Respondents need to be over 18-years-old and work on an animal farm, such as dairy or dry stock, cattle, sheep, goat, or deer etc. The survey is open until 1 November 2022.

Cathleen says, “This research will document the wide variety of unwinding and relaxation activities. The information can be used to suggest ways to increase wellbeing among farmers and inform resources in rural areas.”

Respondents have the option to receive a copy of the results.
