Explore Safe This Summer

Land Search and Rescue is reminding everyone to explore safe this summer as we embrace the holiday season. Follow the five essential steps below to stay safe and reduce risks for you and your loved ones while out on your summer adventures.

The Land Safety Code: Five Essential Steps to Stay Safe

  1. Choose the right trip for you
Learn about the route and make sure you have the skills for it.
  2. Understand the weather
It can change fast. Check the forecast and change your plans if needed.
  3. Pack warm clothes and extra food
Prepare for bad weather and an unexpected night out.
  4. Share your plans and take ways to get help
Telling a trusted person your trip details and taking a distress beacon can save your life.
  5. Take care of yourself and each other
Eat, drink, and rest; stick with your group, and make decisions together.

Established in 1934, Land Search and Rescue has over 3,000 trained volunteers, coordinated through the New Zealand Police and the Rescue Coordination Centre. They are ready to respond at any time, helping people in need return home safely from regional and forest parks, to shorelines and caves, to urban and suburban areas. In the year 2023/24 they carried out 495 search and rescue operations assisting 600 people, saving 41 lives and spending 162,962 volunteer hours in service.

PGG Wrightson is proud to get behind Land Search and Rescue on their mission to ensure everyone comes home safe. Learn more about their important work on their website here, and consider donating to the cause—every dollar helps Land Search and Rescue save lives. Those who donate throughout December 2024 will go in the draw for a holiday hamper.
