Excellent options on offer at yearling bull sales, with rams to follow
Strong prospects for purchasers to meet breeding plan criteria at more than 50 yearling bull sales throughout the country, with a look ahead to ram sales coming up.
With the first of the 2024 yearling bull sales underway, purchasers can look forward to some high-quality genetics on offer and good selections of bulls at more than 50 sales throughout the country, running through to mid-October, with plenty of yearling bulls also available via private treaty.
Callum Stewart, PGG Wrightson Livestock National Genetics Manager, says most farmers know their bull requirements.
“Most have consulted their genetics representative to prepare a suitable breeding plan, and clearly understand what traits they need to enhance the bottom line.
“In their yearling bull selections, dairy sector purchasers have generally prioritised genetics that will deliver calving ease and low birthweight, while beef farmers are interested in genetics that will result in a combination of moderate birth weight with growth,” he says.
Following close after the yearling bull sales is another important period for many farmers, Callum reckons.
“Staying a step ahead, planning now for the upcoming ram sale season in November and December will prove time well spent. With 80 per cent of ram genetics passed on to the lambs, as with bulls making a sound decision on ram selection will pay long-term dividends in the genetics of a flock over several years.
“Particularly considering the recently reported reduction in sheep numbers, with 2.9 per cent fewer breeding ewes and 7.9 per cent fewer trading sheep between 30 June 2023 and 30 June 2024, a potential oversupply of rams is possible, providing buyers with a greater opportunity to obtain exactly what they need to improve their flock. That requires a good strategy. The PGG Wrightson Genetics team has the tools to assist.
“Leading into the ram season, it pays to coordinate with your genetics representative to ensure you have clearly identified what you are trying to achieve. Now is the ideal time to start planning, including assessing the needs of your flock, what they lack and how best you can unlock further potential in your ewes,” he says.
