Citrus Tech Tips
- Target lemon tree borer by pruning out infested material before the end of the month, after which adult borer start to emerge and lay their eggs in new plant material.
- Continue to apply fungicides through August to ensure good fruit quality come harvest. Suitable products include Folpan™, Kocide Opti, Tri-Base Blue or Dithane® Rainshield™ Neotec. Copper hydroxide products such as Kocide Opti control a broad range of wet weather diseases, such as melanose, brown rot and verrucosis.
- Take soil tests now, if not already done, to determine your fertiliser requirements for the coming season.
- Depending on recent soil and leaf tests results and anticipated cropping information for the coming season, base fertiliser applications may need to be made in August.
- Once the new flush starts, consider applications of foliar fertilisers such as Gramitrel while soil temperatures are low. Cooler conditions can limit nutrient uptake by roots and slow growth leading into spring.
Overwintering pests such as scale and thrips can become a significant issue in spring when warmer temperatures start to encourage population growth. The Fruitfed Supplies Crop Monitoring team can help determine what pests are overwintering on your property and the predominant lifecycle stage present. This is important information when decidingon chemical control options at this time of year. Reducing populations now gets your programme off to a strong start and can help to reduce issues coming into spring.
