Wool Report: Wrapping Up the Wool Market in 2023

As the year comes to a close, Rowena Duncum from The Country caught up with Grant Edwards, the General Manager of Wool at PGG Wrightson, to discuss the latest updates in the wool market and offer insights for the upcoming break.

Strong Finish to 2023 Wool Sales

Grant Edwards began by sharing positive news from the last wool sales of the year in Napier and Christchurch. Despite the unexpected delay in the recommissioning of the main Napier Wool Scour until late January or February, the market finished on a strong note. The best wools are fetching over $3 per kilo greasy, showcasing resilience and demand in the industry.

Remarkable Progress in Napier Wool Scour Recommissioning

Grant highlighted the remarkable progress made at the Napier Wool Scour, emphasising the challenges faced after the plant was filled with contaminated wool post-cyclone in July. Despite setbacks, the dedication and hard work have paid off, contributing to the positive market finish.

Factors Influencing the Strong Wool Market

The strength of the strong wool market is attributed to wet conditions up north, limiting quantities available for sale. Additionally, concerns arise regarding the future availability of good-quality wool for sale. Grant urged shearers planning future sessions to promptly shear wool due to the hot and humid conditions leading to potential yellowing.

Staying Informed Over the Break

For those keen to stay updated on wool news during the break, Grant recommended checking out PGG Wrightson's recent Wool Street Journal, available on their website. The first wool sales of the new year are planned for January 11th, 2024, indicating a swift start to the wool market in 2024.

Wishing Everyone a Festive Season

As the interview wrapped up, Rowena and Grant exchanged well-wishes for the festive season. Grant extended his wishes to wool growers for a joyful Christmas and a happy New Year, emphasising the importance of spending quality time with family and friends.
