Service bulls and dairy beef the focus in dairy livestock
Defer-A-Bull an easy cashflow option for dairy farmers, while strong demand indicated as dairy beef sales commence.
Across the country dairy bulls are selling well, including via hybrid bidr, on-farm sales and by private treaty. This year farmers are taking the Defer-A-Bull option in greater numbers, the popularity of PGG Wrightson’s offering to finance a bull team with no up-front expenses and nothing to pay until the bulls are sold coming into its own among those who are more cashflow conscious. Some breeders of service bulls are removing the bulls that don’t meet the mark for size or maturity, putting them aside for subsequent sale and utilisation in the autumn or next year.
Meanwhile, North Island dairy beef sales are set to start in mid-October, with sales south of the Cook Strait commencing a fortnight later. Due to the shortage of store stock, calf rearers and dairy farmers alike should benefit from the strength of these sales, with steady demand likely for stock at the entry level by value and age. Those with young dairy beef stock on hand to sell would be well advised to have a plan ready, and to investigate their options, whether by private treaty paddock sale or via the weaner and calf sales across the country.
