Grant Edwards, General Manager of Wool at PGG Wrightson, takes a final look at the wool market for the year with Jamie Mackay from The Country

Jamie Mackay took a final look at the state of the wool market for the year with Grant Edwards.

Both agree that it's been a very challenging year for the wool industry.  Jamie reckons Grant would never have had a tougher year than he's had this year.

Grant says that people within the wool industry - including the PGW team and the farmers themselves - have had to be very resilient.  A lot of the factors effecting the market are outside their control.  But there is light at the end of the tunnel.  It just needs to get closer!

The recent relaxation of COVID protocols in China should hopefully open things up for the second half of the financial year.

The big challenge is to find a meaningful use for strong wool.  Otherwise, there's a chance people will drift out of wool production altogether if things get much worse.  Grant points out that big name wool handlers overseas all have big expansion plans - which is positive news.  Producers just need to meet the present challenge and head it off.
