Final Five in the Young Horticulturist of the Year 2024 Competition
The stakes are high for the five finalists in the Young Horticulturist of the Year awards, who met last week for an orientation day in the lead-up to the finals. The competition aims to encourage young people in horticulture to develop their skills and knowledge further and build connections with future leaders in the industry. It is a culmination of seven industry competitions; Young Grower, Young Viticulturist, Young Amenity Horticulturist, Young Landscaper, Young Florists and Flower Growers, Young Aborist NZ and Young Plant Producer.
The five finalists for 2024 are Craig Scott of Hamilton (New Arborist), Kyla Mathewson of Dunedin (Young Amenity Horticulturist), Tai Nelson of Kumeu (Young Viticulturist), Taylor Leabourn of Pukekohe (Young Grower), and Anna England of Christchurch (Young Plant Producer).
Since 2005, Fruitfed Supplies has proudly supported the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition, alongside the Young Grower and Young Viticulturist competitions.
“The competition offers opportunities for our industry’s young leaders to learn and grow personally and professionally, and recognises their talents and capabilities. All these things make Fruitfed Supplies’ support of the Young Horticulturist competition a natural fit,” says Duncan Fletcher, Fruitfed Supplies National Manager.
This year, the final takes place on the 30th and 31st of October in Karaka, Auckland. We wish all contestants the best of luck as they compete for the title of Young Horticulturist of the Year 2024. During the final, the finalists will participate in a two-day challenge that tests their horticulturist practical skills, leadership ability, speechcraft, business acumen and industry knowledge. The finals are open to the public at Karaka Bloodstock. The Grand Final Dinner and Awards will take place on the evening of 31 October at the Karaka Pavilion.
