Livestock Report: Strong bull sale results, market confidence and new opportunities emerging in Marlborough
Despite challenging winter weather across parts of the South Island, confidence continues to build across the livestock sector, with strong bull sale results, improving sheep and beef returns, and emerging land-use opportunities providing reasons for optimism.
Speaking with The Country's Hamish Mackay, PGG Wrightson Marlborough Area Livestock Manager Pete Barnes said recent weather events had created difficulties for many farming communities, particularly in Marlborough, Kaikōura, and parts of Otago and the Mackenzie Country. Barnes acknowledged the challenges facing affected farmers and highlighted the resilience that continues to define the sector.
“Weather is always a great leveller,” Barnes said, while extending his thoughts to farmers managing wet conditions, flooding, and snow impacts across the region.
Market confidence building across the livestock sector
While weather remains an ongoing challenge, market fundamentals continue to improve. Barnes said this season's bull sales have been particularly encouraging, reflecting renewed confidence among commercial beef producers and rewarding breeders who have continued investing in genetics through more difficult periods.
“We've had an incredible season,” he said.
Across six stud bull sales conducted by PGG Wrightson in Marlborough over three days, vendors sold 326 bulls under the hammer, alongside a further 40 bulls sold through a Nelson-based client. Barnes described the results as a significant achievement for the region and a strong reflection of current demand.
Strong beef schedules, improved sheep and beef returns, and continued investment in livestock performance are all contributing to a more positive outlook, with buyers showing confidence in securing quality genetics for their farming businesses.
“The breeders have got the recipe right; there just seemed to be a positive vibe across the board. Everyone seemed to be in a good space, and that's good going forward.”
Land-use change creating opportunities
Barnes also highlighted changes occurring within Marlborough's viticulture sector. As parts of the region's vineyard area undergo a period of adjustment, some growers are assessing whether older vines should be replanted or removed entirely. While viticulture remains a cornerstone of the Marlborough economy, the changing landscape is creating opportunities for alternative land uses.
For livestock farmers, that could present opportunities for lamb finishing, grazing and other productive farming systems on land previously dedicated to vineyards. Barnes believes these conversations will become increasingly important as landowners evaluate future options and seek to maximise value from their properties.
Supporting farmers through changing conditions
At PGG Wrightson, our livestock team remains focused on helping farmers navigate both the opportunities and challenges presented by changing market and seasonal conditions.
Whether it's identifying grazing opportunities, sourcing quality livestock, supporting breeding programmes or providing informed market advice, our team works closely alongside farmers to help them make confident decisions for their businesses. While recent weather events have reminded everyone of the importance of resilience and preparation, strong livestock markets and encouraging bull sale results provide a timely reminder that confidence is returning across the sector.
For Marlborough farmers and the wider livestock industry, the outlook remains positive, underpinned by strong fundamentals, quality genetics, and the adaptability that has long been a hallmark of New Zealand farming.
