Wool Report: Insights into market resilience and industry trends

In a recent interview with Rowena Duncum from The Country, Grant Edwards, the General Manager of Wool at PGG Wrightson, provided valuable insights into the current state of the wool market and highlighted significant developments within the industry.

Market Overview

Grant Edwards began by discussing the recent auction sale in Napier, noting a decline in the quantity of wool coming forward for sale, as expected during this time of the year due to increased moisture and heat. Despite this decline, markets remained largely steady throughout February, with large quantities of wool entering the market in both the North and South Islands. Edwards emphasised the market's ability to absorb these higher quantities, attributing this resilience to the strong presence of buyers from China and India. He also highlighted notable price increases for poorer styles and oddments compared to previous seasons, indicating positive market dynamics.

Industry Updates

Duncum and Edwards also discussed recent developments within the wool industry. Palle Peterson, the GM of Export at PGG Wrightson, is set to embark on a five-week overseas trip in May to visit current and potential customers in various countries, underscoring the company's commitment to international partnerships and market expansion. Additionally, Edwards noted a significant transition within the industry, with several long-standing figures retiring, signalling the end of an era and highlighting the dedication of individuals who have contributed decades of experience to the wool sector.

National Shearing Circuit

The conversation shifted to the National Shearing Circuit, sponsored by PGG Wrightson and Vetmed. The final round on 2nd shear recently took place at Pahiatua, with the circuit set to culminate at the prestigious Golden Shears event in Masterton later in the week. Edwards highlighted Nathan Stratford as a top contender in the upcoming event, with the winner earning automatic entry into the New Zealand team and a Hyundai vehicle for a year. This sponsorship underscores PGG Wrightson's support for the shearing community and commitment to fostering talent within the industry.
