Livestock Report: How GO-STOCK Helps Farmers Grow with Confidence
Strong livestock prices have created opportunities for farmers across New Zealand, but they've also highlighted the importance of having flexible trading options.
According to PGG Wrightson National GO-STOCK Manager John O'Neill, livestock values have undergone a significant shift over the past 12 to 18 months, prompting many farmers to rethink how they buy, grow and trade stock.
"There's been a fundamental shift in values over the last 12 to 18 months," says O'Neill. "Initially people were wondering whether it was a short-term spike or a longer-term change, but at the moment it appears to be more sustainable."
As farmers look to maximise strong market conditions while carefully managing cash flow and borrowing capacity, GO-STOCK continues to provide a practical solution.
What Is GO-STOCK?
GO-STOCK is PGG Wrightson's livestock trading programme that enables farmers to purchase and grow livestock without needing to fund the full upfront purchase price themselves.
Unlike traditional livestock finance, PGG Wrightson retains ownership of the stock throughout the trading period.
"GO-STOCK has been around for about 10 years," says O'Neill. "The key difference is that PGG Wrightson owns the stock."
The programme is designed to help farmers take advantage of opportunities when good stock becomes available, while preserving capital and maintaining balance sheet flexibility.
Preserving Working Capital
Under the GO-STOCK model, PGG Wrightson purchases the livestock on behalf of the farmer. The farmer then manages and farms the stock as they normally would while benefiting from weight gain, growth or changing market conditions.
When the stock is sold, PGG Wrightson recovers the original purchase cost, applies an agreed fee, and returns the margin generated during the trading period to the farmer.
"You preserve your balance sheet," says O'Neill. "We pay for the stock when you decide to buy them, and you farm them as if they are your own."
This approach can be particularly valuable when livestock prices are strong and farmers want to continue growing their business without increasing pressure on existing funding arrangements.
A Flexible Option in Changing Markets
Market conditions, seasonal influences and feed availability can all create opportunities for livestock trading.
O'Neill says flexibility is increasingly important as farmers navigate changing conditions and look for ways to make the most of favourable markets.
With strong livestock values and good feed conditions in many regions, GO-STOCK gives farmers another option to access trading opportunities while retaining financial flexibility.
Getting Started with GO-STOCK
For farmers already working with PGG Wrightson Livestock, getting started is straightforward.
"As long as you've got a trading history with the company and a relationship with a PGW rep, it's really simple," says O'Neill.
Whether you're looking to grow stock numbers, make use of surplus feed or capitalise on market opportunities, GO-STOCK can provide a practical pathway to achieve your goals.
