Woodbank and Matariki put bull quality on show
Clarence Valley, Kaikoura the showcase for 53rd edition of sale representing almost 90 years of pedigree breeding.
A significant feature of the annual South Island bull sales season is the combined Woodbank Angus and Matariki Hereford sale in Clarence Valley, Kaikoura.
At this year’s sale in late June, the 53rd edition, when two separate farming entities both within the Murray family come together representing almost 90 years of pedigree breeding, 61 Hereford and 68 Angus bulls were offered.
Both studs recorded near complete clearances. Woodbank averaged over $9000 for their Angus bulls, of which the top priced lot sold to Oregon Angus for $40,000, along with stud bulls also selling to Riverlee Angus, Grampians Angus and Meadowslea Angus. Meanwhile Matariki sold three stud bulls: to Wilencote, Mahuta and Okawa to achieve an overall sale average of $9140.
Simon Eddington, PGG Wrightson Livestock Genetics Rep for Marlborough, Nelson and Canterbury said the sale showed that, despite the present challenges, buyers are still prepared to pay for quality.
“Although it’s been a trying season, and there is not lot of money out there at the moment, buyers are still looking for good genetics. They know what they want and buy accordingly, as those satisfying clearances demonstrate,” he says.
