Wairarapa weaner fairs showcase the region’s best
Consistency, superior growth and productivity should meet strong buyer demand for station bred cattle known for how well they shift.
With the North Island weaner sales season almost upon us, Wairarapa has two big weaner fairs that will attract farmers from throughout the region and beyond, at the Masterton Saleyards on 12 and 25 March.
Renowned for their productivity, and capacity to do well in their own conditions as well as in neighbouring regions, traditional Wairarapa station bred cattle derive from several premium studs. McFadzean Cattle Company is one of the foremost, frequently recording the region’s top weaner price, and often surpassing prices fetched throughout the rest of the country. Johnie McFadzean is putting up between 120 and 140 weaners at the 12 March sale, averaging 320 kilograms, showing strong confirmation, deep bodies and square backends.
“This is an excellent event for us, and we are looking forward to a big day in the saleyards."
“Our weaners sell well based on consistency, superior growth rates and feed efficiency. We are putting forward a mix of our Meat Maker and Super Angus weaners. After a mild, wet spring set them on their way, this season’s weaners are as good as we’ve had for several years, and in the current environment, we are pleased to put them in front of what we expect will be a motivated audience at the fair."
“Masterton’s fairs are among the stronger weaner fairs around, with the quality of stock as good as anywhere. The exotic crosses go particularly well, and are known for how well they shift onto the next farm. We are looking forward to seeing our regular buyers again this year, including farmers from Manawatu, and Hawke’s Bay,” he says.
Johnie McFadzean manages 2500-hectare Glenbrae Station, west of Masterton, where McFadzean Cattle Company weaners are bred, based on varying percentages of Angus and Simmental genetics.
PGG Wrightson Livestock Wairarapa sheep and beef representative Andy Jennings is also looking forward to two big days at the saleyards.
“In Brian Diamond, we have one of the country’s best auctioneers. Anyone offering weaners here can be sure he will maximise values. As well as the McFadzean cattle, we have several other highly respected stations offering premium weaners, including Whiterock Station and Te Whanga Station. We are looking forward to achieving some great results, for buyers as well as sellers, on these two big days,” he says.
