Values elevated on the back of strong demand

Strong markets and favourable processor schedules spell good news for farmers, though some regions challenged by adverse climatic conditions.

Strong demand for all types of livestock continues to support elevated values throughout the country.

In a period where the last of the old season’s lambs have almost all sold, and the first lambs of the current season are now coming to the market, processor schedules continue to spell good news for farmers.

Some parts of both islands are dealing with the after effects of challenging climatic conditions, which will set them back over the coming weeks and months. Elsewhere however, particularly across the upper South and North Islands, early spring lambs are beginning to come out.

While weather challenges may have impacted lamb survivability in some regions, overall signs of spring growth are evident in most areas and the lambs on the ground appear to be thriving. That said, following recent weather events parts of Otago and Southland are facing testing times.

Plenty of store cattle are also coming through the sale yards. Pricing on these, and most other livestock types, is meeting vendor expectations.

Demand across all types of beef and dairy beef has remained steady, with all breeds selling well, while the yearling bull sales season featured exceptional demand, resulting in record values.
