Two-year-old bulls offer quality and value
Keen market expected in May and June, while purchasers with a smart genetics programme are set to maximise benefit at the sales.
This year’s two-year-old bull sale season commences in mid-May and will run for a six-week period.
After a profitable season of weaner sales, featuring record prices, cattle farmers are reaping the rewards, focusing on how best to make the most of positive market conditions.
While cow numbers remain steady, indications are that plenty of bulls are available, generally in excellent condition, though how many of these come forward remains to be seen. Rather than extending supply beyond probable demand levels, breeders are likely to hold a proportion of their bulls back. Competition on par with last year is therefore indicated, meaning plenty of premium quality on offer, at firm values.
Farmers with a sound and factually based genetics programme to underpin their stud purchases will maximise results. Taking into account their farming characteristics and ability to match these to the most appropriate genetics, those keeping it simple, focusing on growth, fertility, carcass weight and marbling, are set to reap the benefits, regardless of breed.
Assessing the market early, in conjunction with a PGG Wrightson genetics representative, and focusing on those breeders offering bulls that will best meet the needs of a particular farm, would be time well spent.
