Falling ewe numbers places greater emphasis on quality genetics at this season’s ram sales.

Although reducing ewe numbers are influencing this year’s ram sales, prices remain approximately equivalent to those paid in recent years. Breeders focused on the high-quality genetics that the market is chasing are therefore cashing in.

With sales commencing in the North Island in mid-November and due to follow shortly in the South, purchasers are committed to selecting the best animal, with the best physical attributes, backed up by the data: constitution and the depth of the ram are gaining attention, with sales forthcoming, at satisfactory prices, when breed value statistics verify that initial impression.

Romneys remain the breed most entrenched into the New Zealand mindset, widely relied on to achieve the result. Rams from shedding breeds meanwhile, are also subject to strong demand, as those farmers who have converted are fully committed to the evolving genetics associated with these breeds.

Looking at those who are achieving the greatest success in the current ram sales, those who have sought trusted advice, established key partnerships, and invested in a progressive breeding programme are reaping the benefits. Meeting the evolving needs of commercial sheep farmers for the best possible genetics is a long-term mission that requires careful planning, and patience, though the rewards are gratifying.

In sales to the end of November, terminal rams averaged over $1000, with prices for the top rams of approximately $2000; the best performing Romney studs averaged $1900 with their top selling rams changing hands around $5000; while the shedding breeds also averaged $1900 per ram, and up to approximately $6000 for the top priced lots.

One note of caution: since the number of rams offered outweighs the decline in ewe numbers, a surplus of rams is likely to remain unsold at the end of the season.
