Moving Day among busiest in recent years

Interest rates, returns and renewed bank enthusiasm boost sector and stimulate activity on dairying’s biggest day.

This year’s Moving Day, the start of the new dairy season and one of the most important on the rural calendar, was one of the busiest for several years.

Reduced interest rates, strong farmgate returns, and active bank lending have revitalised the rural property sector in the past few months. Dairy sits at the forefront of these trends, accounting for a large proportion of transactions and related activity.

Dairy farm sales were up year-on-year by almost one third. Meanwhile, approaching the end of the 2025/26 New Zealand dairy season, PGG Wrightson recorded the most herd sales transacted for several years.

Sharemilkers picking up new contracts, new farm owners taking their first step onto the property ladder, herds shifting, families consolidating ownership: all requiring months of preparation and major logistical efforts to re-locate, some within and some between regions, or even islands.

After 1 June, as newcomers settle into new surroundings, the activity will not subside. If this is you, in the coming weeks be sure to check in on your local PGG Wrightson dairy livestock team, meet your new livestock representatives, come into the store, and make the acquaintance of the PGG Wrightson retail team members.

PGG Wrightson wishes all our dairy customers the best of luck for the new season, while welcoming new customers to reach out to our team and find out how we can add value and assist with your business.
