Expectations high for big season of dairy beef weaner sales
Fairs start in Waikato in mid-October, set to run through Christmas and into January.
Regular fairs in Waikato from mid-October will signal the start of the dairy beef weaner season, which will also commence in Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Manawatu by the end of the month.
With so many livestock classes currently changing hands at record or near record levels, particularly in the store cattle market, expectations are high. Attending a dairy beef weaner fair is among the best ways to acquire livestock at entry level prices.
While all indications point to more calves being reared this year, heavy demand is likely to welcome good quality, well bred, well reared calves, and records will likely topple. Plenty of Friesian bulls, plus dairy beef bulls, steers and heifers, will be offered. Once prices have found a level, likely after the first one or two fairs, those seeking to transact through paddock sales will have a clear market indication to work towards.
After the sales in Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Manawatu are under way, Northland and Dannevirke all have dairy beef weaner fairs scheduled fortnightly, while feature sales in the South Island will start in Temuka on 20 November. bidr will be operating at most dairy beef weaner sales. Sales will continue through until Christmas, with a few sales also scheduled for the new year.
