Demand over supply keeps livestock values up
From last season’s lambs to beef and dairy beef feeder calves, plus dairy cows and heifers – all types and all breeds selling well.
Supply and demand factors ensured values across all livestock types remained solid through September.
As always, weather conditions influenced decisions. Fewer than average hours of sunshine in some regions and lower than average moisture levels delayed growth, which played a part in volumes coming to market. Some farmers opted to hold stock back and therefore will present them in better condition once feed is more abundant.
Processor schedules continue to push up values for last season’s lambs. Farmers need to keep an eye on the teeth being cut to maximise prices.
Demand across all types of beef and dairy beef is elevated, with all breeds selling well. Well-bred, traditional cattle are most sought after, representing the apex of the market.
Rearers are purchasing feeder calves in encouraging volumes, while breeders are also rearing large numbers. Starting in the north in late October, a great selection of dairy beef weaners is set to come to market.
After a record payout and with the outlook for the sector holding firm, dairy cows and heifers are in high demand throughout the country, transacting at solid values. All breeds of dairy service bulls are selling well. North Island yearling beef bull sales have been consistently strong, with sales in the South Island expected to follow a similar trend.
