Clearing sales present herd opportunities

Premium dairy genetics on offer, developed over many decades, as high performing cows and heifers come to market.

Several clearing sales, featuring dairy herds with exceptional genetics, are on the calendar for April and May, with Taranaki farms to the fore.

These sales offer opportunities to secure high performing dairy cows and heifers, and future show stars.

On 10 April at Makuri Holsteins, Stratford, and via bidr, a complete dispersal of the milking cows and mated heifers of the highly respected stud’s herd will take place. Forty years of dedication by vendors Mark Rowland and Jo Dorn, including bringing in international genetics, has made Makuri one of the Open Country Whanganui factory’s top suppliers. From a milking herd of 92 cows, in 2023/24 Makuri produced 62,600 kilograms of milk solids. Makuri cows have won multiple dairy awards and show ribbons through the years.

You can view this dispersal sale here on bidr.

On 14 and 15 April, Thornlea Jerseys, Otorohonga, undertakes a complete dispersal. Vendor Nigel Riddell is a fourth generation Jersey farmer. Along with wife Julz and family, he is offering 207 registered in-milk Jersey cows, plus sundry dry carryover cows, in-calf and R1 heifers and R1 bulls, a total of approximately 400 lots. Jersey semen straws are also offered at the hybrid sale.

You can view Day One, and Day Two of the dispersal sale here on bidr.

Other notable upcoming dairy clearing sales include:
•    16 April at Morrinsville Saleyards, a high index Friesian, Friesian cross herd and in-calf heifer dispersal sale will be carried out on behalf of Finner Farms.

•    17 April, on behalf of IR and LG Diack, a dispersal sale of 138 Friesian and Friesian cross cows and 46 capital stock heifers, the result of 50 years of genetics, with the herd code having 70 female contracts to LIC over the years, also including a strong A2A2 component and current contract cows and heifers.

•    24 April, on-farm at JCB Farms, Inglewood Neil and Trudy Vince will set up for auction 218 rising three year in-milk dairy cows, calving from 10 July and scanned to early mating dates.

•    9 May, at PGG Inglewood Dairy Centre, Bruce Cox and Tania Reid are selling 15 years of genetics: strong boned cows with solid production, achieving 470 to 480 kilograms of milk solids.

•    20 May, on farm in Hawera, Alan ‘Bones’ and Leonie Campbell will present 180 strong Friesian cows, the culmination of 40 years of quality genetics and production on rolling sand country.
