Angus breeders head north

AGM, visits to seven local studs, and experiencing the best of Northland set to feature in tour for Angus industry aficionados.

Approximately 65 Angus breeders from throughout the country will congregate in Northland later in March as the region hosts the Angus New Zealand AGM, and visits to seven local Angus studs over three and a half days.

Chris Biddles, chair of the Angus New Zealand Northland ward and principal of Te Atarangi Angus, has led the organising committee of dedicated local breeders who are all looking forward to making this a successful showcase of Northland and its Angus cattle.

“Last year to coincide with our AGM a group of young Angus breeders put on an amazing tour of Southland and Otago. They set the bar high, giving us a wonderful time. We aim to match that, ensuring our visitors enjoy an outstanding experience of the north, with sightseeing trips to the Bay of Islands on the itinerary, the home of the birth of the nation, alongside the industry focused activities and networking that is part of this event. We want to show our visitors a good time in the Bay of Islands and Northland,” says Chris.

The New Zealand Angus AGM is on Sunday 22 March, with the rest of the itinerary running over the following three days. Studs hosting visits include Rorira Angus, Alpine Angus and Waitangi Angus, while Puketi, Lomond and Hokianga Angus also feature. Delegates will be accommodated at the Copthorne Hotel, Bay of Islands.

PGG Wrightson Livestock is proud to sponsor the event, which will include the Angus Youth auction on Tuesday 24 March, also offered on bidr. PGG Wrightson's National Genetics Manager, Callum McDonald and Upper North Island Genetics Representative and Auctioneer Cam Heggie will both join the tour.

“Northland is an important region for the Angus fraternity, with some well-established, innovative and diligent farmers leading the breed’s development. Showcasing them to their peers from the rest of the country will make for a productive and enjoyable few days,” says Cam Heggie.
