All eyes on bull sale season
Genetics team working hard behind the scenes to co-ordinate sales throughout the country in what promises to be a bumper season.
This year’s bull sale season, starting in May, is set to be a big one. Bull sales represent one of the busiest times of the year for the PGG Wrightson Livestock Genetics team.
After recently stepping up to the role of national genetics manager, Callum McDonald is fully focused on the importance of bull sales to the red meat sector.
“Behind the scenes, preparation starts well ahead of the first sale. We are fully into it already, inspecting bulls, ensuring they are ready for the catalogue, working with breeders and clients to co-ordinate sales throughout the country,” he says.
With many sheep and beef farmers riding high schedule prices, the importance of reinvesting in quality genetics for future production is strong, says Callum.
“One of the most important and effective ways to do that is by improving herd genetic traits,” he says.
Callum and his eight member genetics team, alongside specialist auctioneers, covers the country.
“Behind the scenes we work closely with each other and seamlessly with the PGG Wrightson commercial livestock teams. Anyone who deals with one of us deals with us all.”
With all generally busy in their own regions, the whole team is seldom together at the same time, though they are always in constant contact.
“Our network is our strength. That level of critical mass provides significant benefit,” says Callum.
Genetics is a long-term pursuit, with farmers always looking to buy the best they can within their means.
“You can’t just flick a switch and change overnight. What we do has a cumulative effect. We are always looking into the future. A bull or ram going through the sale ring this year is a result of breeding decisions made several years ago. At the same time, what we source today will sell in future years. This is a long game,” says Callum.
Commencing in mid-May and running for approximately six weeks, the two-year-old bull sale season is the main annual showcase for beef studs through the North and South Islands. Members of the genetics team are responsible for, and will be present at, every sale.
