South Island markets solid through winter

Good demand for both store and finished stock

As the availability of processing space for cattle became easier to obtain, the South Island market for store cattle has lifted. Finishers are paying premiums for cattle that can be finished in the spring.

Due to raising schedules premiums are being paid for both store and finished stock, resulting in good yardings of sheep and cattle through the saleyards through June.

Mid Canterbury lamb finishers have been particularly active in the market, topping up on the lamb numbers that will enable them to make the most of what has so far been a relatively kind winter, providing good feed levels and promising circumstances for a profitable spring.
