Cyclone Gabrielle and the Recovery Response

PGG Wrightson (PGW) has assembled its National Response Group to assess the impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle and to coordinate our response supported by our Business Unit Response Teams.

Over the initial days our immediate focus has been on the safety of our people.

We are now turning to consider the ways in which PGW can support our people, clients and rural communities as a clearer picture begins to emerge about the effects of the severe weather that has lashed the North Island.

While it is early days in the response and recovery phase, we can provide the following brief comments on some of the response actions as follows:

  • PGW has made an initial financial donation of $30,000 to the Rural Support Trust to support the Trust in the work it is doing in providing support - https://www.rural-support.org.nz/
  • We are working in with industry groups in the response efforts that the Ministry for Primary Industries is coordinating and working in with government and relevant authorities.
  • We are working with Ag Proud NZ Charitable Trust https://agproud.co.nz/ to facilitate farmers making donations of product via their PGW account to be made available to impacted clients in the North Island.  We are also in discussion with Ag Proud on some longer term initiatives.
  • We have PGW staff who volunteer for Land Search and Rescue and the Red Cross and we are supporting these staff to free them up for this important work in impacted areas.
  • We are establishing a process for PGW team members to be able to make an individual donations should they wish to contribute financially to the response effort.

Our National Response Group will be exploring a wide range of other initiatives whereby PGW can support our staff, clients and rural communities in the response efforts, and we will provide further information as details of these initiatives are confirmed.

We have heard of heartening stories of neighbours and communities helping one another and we pay tribute to the emergency services and volunteers who have already worked tirelessly.

‘Helping grow the country’ is our vision and is at the heart of what we do, and this is especially the case at times of challenge and adversity.

It is early days in this long recovery and in the meantime our retail stores remain open (some intermittently and with reduced capacity in affected areas) and our people will be getting on-farm or on-orchard to offer assistance when it is practicable and safe to do so.
