Yearling bulls set to sell well following record season
Starting late August, around 60 sales nationwide will again gauge the health of red meat sector as farmers reinvest in genetic base
After the record breaking two-year-old bull sales season that concluded early in the winter, yearling bulls will take their turn in sale arenas in late August, initially at the top of the North Island, progressing through the country to finish in Southland in late October.
Farmers are likely to continue reinvesting recent red meat profits by enhancing the genetic base of their herds.
Sales of yearling bulls stand as an opportunity to chase the heifer market for mating, while the cow market will factor in some purchases.
A mild winter means most bulls will present in excellent condition. Around 60 sales are scheduled throughout the country. While the supply of yearling bulls should meet demand, for the most sought-after bulls, based on how well the two-year-old bulls sold, values are likely to at least hold firm on last year’s yearling sales.
Seeking to meet the four-day old calf market, dairy farmers will seek appropriate beef genetics. Both dairy and beef farmers are looking for specific traits to enhance breeding programmes. Calving ease will be the predominant focus for most. Short gestation and growth will also likely be sought.
All breeds should be well represented. Most sales will be live streamed on bidr, effectively establishing a nationwide market for both buyers and sellers. Its national presence means the PGG Wrightson Livestock Genetics team is uniquely well positioned to navigate this. Those with a forward plan to secure their bulls for the season will have the advantage. A discussion with your livestock representative well ahead of the sales will help ensure your requirements are fully met.
