Pending ram sale season well set up
Strategic approach to ram procurement will pay dividends as farmers take the opportunity to re-invest in carefully selected genetics
Ram sale season starts in late October, running through until mid-December in the North Island, and until mid-February in the South Island.
Last season saw plenty of interest in rams with farmers prepared to pay for quality genetics.
Whatever specific traits you seek, whether that be survival, growth, FE resistance, or something else to suit the conditions of your farm, this year’s sales will provide plenty of choice.
PGG Wrightson National Genetics Manager Callum McDonald suggests that a strategic approach to the ram sales season will pay dividends.
“Setting some individual goals that specify what genetics will best add value to your flock is a must. That’s where the PGG Wrightson genetics team comes in, to assist you to work out how and where to find the rams that will help you achieve those objectives,” he says.
With the red meat market in positive heart and good returns putting farmers in an optimistic frame of mind, the season is well set up. Callum says decisions made in the coming months will have a cumulative positive effect, with the potential to boost the bottom line for farmers.
“A ram is a significant purchase, with progeny potentially remaining part of a flock for up to seven years, which means decision making and future focus are key to that choice. That said, considering the long-term value the right genetics can bring, more farmers every year are realising that astute investment in the right rams will repay them many times over.”
