North Canterbury Farmer Dave Long Benefits from Go-Stock

North Canterbury sheep and beef farmer Dave Long has embraced Go-Stock, utilising the PGG Wrightson cashflow tool for several years with great success. Go-Stock has been instrumental in freeing up Dave’s capital when he needs it most, allowing him to invest in essential farm improvements such as fencing.

Dave Long, who took over his family farm 16 years ago, manages 450 hectares of flats and an additional lease block of hill country. With 2100 half-bred ewes and 250 Angus/Hereford cross cows, Dave’s operation is extensive and demanding. To enhance his cash-flow and facilitate capital development, Dave utilises the GO-STOCK program.
Alex Horn, PGG Wrightson's sheep and beef representative for Amberley, Hawarden, and Amuri, works closely with Dave to maximise the benefits of Go-Stock.

In early winter, on behalf of PGG Wrightson, Alex uses Go-Stock to purchase around 150 of Dave’s homebred calves at market value. This transaction provides Dave with the cash needed for farm improvements. Dave then carries those calves through to finishing if he can, selling them whenever he and Alex determine the market will give them the best price. Once sold, PGG Wrightson retains the original purchase price, along with fees and selling costs. Dave then receives the trading margin, enabling him to capitalise on market opportunities and secure a higher return.
Some of the calves may be sold in spring to capitalise on favourable market conditions, demonstrating the program's adaptability to market environments.

One of the key advantages of GO-STOCK is its flexibility. Dave appreciates that he can buy back the calves from PGG Wrightson at any point, paying the original purchase price plus fees to date. This flexibility aligns perfectly with his business needs, allowing him to make strategic decisions based on the season and market conditions. “Every year is different, so I need to be able to react to the conditions. Go-Stock gives me that flexibility.”
Dave highlights the simplicity of the program, noting, “It is really easy for my accountant and bank to work with – the paperwork is straightforward. Stock don’t sit on my balance sheet which just makes it so simple.” This ease of management is a significant benefit, ensuring that the program integrates seamlessly into his overall business operations.

A good relationship with his stock agent, Alex Horn, further enhances the value of GO-STOCK for Dave. He shares, “I have a good relationship with my stock agent, which makes the whole process really simple.” This partnership fosters trust and ensures that the program is tailored to meet Dave’s needs.
Alex Horn supports this sentiment, stating, “GO-STOCK is a great tool for my clients and helps them achieve their business goals. My clients love the simplicity of the product.”
PGG Wrightson has recently made significant reductions in Go-Stock fees, ensuring that more farmers can easily access this flexible, straightforward tool designed to improve farm cashflow.
