Livestock markets moving into spring

Lambing in progress, markets historically high, store cattle demand strong and calf rearing grows in popularity as spring commences.

Despite reduced seasonal throughput, markets for both sheep and cattle are holding firm at historically high levels.

Lambing is under way in most of the country with some regions well through. While the grass has stopped growing in many parts of the North Island, some good weather in late August should boost soil temperatures and re-energise the pasture.

Demand for store cattle is strong. With relatively low numbers selling, those that do come forward are generating exceptional prices. As feed becomes more abundant through the spring, this demand will only accelerate, making an excellent opportunity for those farmers with stock to offer into the store market.

Last season’s lambs are now approaching optimal slaughter weight.

With cattle numbers reduced due to farms converting to forestry, noticeably more calves are being reared this year to take advantage of the short supply. Four-day old calf sales have attracted particular interest for well-bred, well-marked Friesian bulls, beef calves and Friesian beef crosses. 

Plenty of people are entering this market and calves are selling well throughout the country, though with many calves tending to sell privately, the size of this market will not be fully understood for the next 18 months to two years, when these cattle will be ready to finish. 

In the meantime, some reports of milk powder shortages are coming forward. Prior to proceeding to acquire stock, anyone intending to rear calves should ensure their milk powder requirements are and will continue to be met.
