Dual-purpose sires set to catch the eye in January sale

Edendale Station, renowned Mid-Canterbury venison stud, presents terminal sires that will attract nationwide attention.

At the Edendale Deer Terminal Sire Sale on 9 January, a handful of dual-purpose elk and wapiti are likely to catch the eye among Edendale’s renowned venison genetics.

On-farm at Edendale Station in the Ashburton Lakes area, the sale invariably attracts the attention of commercial deer farmers from throughout the country who are seeking to enhance venison production by using a high growth rate bull with good constitution.

Based on rising demand for venison, Glen Whyte of Edendale says sentiment at the sale should be positive.

“We are proud to produce terminal sires with reliable constitution, conformation and capability. We expect many of our regular clients will return to Mt Possession to purchase a bull. We are also likely to see a few new faces.

“Offering a mixture of three- and four-year-old terminal bulls, one of our big four-year-olds in particular is cutting a good quantity of velvet, and is one of a several dual-purpose sires, presenting opportunities for both velvet and venison, which presents a credible dual revenue stream from progeny,” he says.

Established in the 1980s, since when it has grown into one of New Zealand’s largest deer farms, Edendale has a long history of selectively breeding and recording DNA data to produce top quality animals, from stock that is renowned as among the country’s foremost for venison and trophy stags.

Presenting a new opportunity for PGG Wrightson Deer customers, Defer-A-Stag is available to purchases made at the Edendale Deer Terminal Sire Sale and other stag sales this season. A simple, flexible way to postpone sire payments, the purpose of Defer-A-Stag is to assist farmers with cashflow. Capped at $10,000 plus GST per animal, with a maximum of four animals per client, Defer-A-Stag is only available to PGG Wrightson account holders.
