Meet Lawrence Paskell: A Lifelong Advocate for Wool and the Great Outdoors

With a career spanning over four decades, Lawrence Paskell is a seasoned and passionate member of the PGW Wool team. Lawrence's journey began in 1977 as a Christmas holiday job with Wrightson NMA, a role that quickly transformed into a lifelong vocation. From learning the ropes in the bin room to earning his Certificate in Wool at Lincoln College, Lawrence's dedication to the wool industry has seen him thrive in numerous roles, including classing, grab operations, customer service management, and operational management for international contracts. Today, he continues to serve as a field rep, a role he has embraced with enthusiasm since 2005.

For Lawrence, the most rewarding part of his work is the relationships he’s built with farmers and shearing teams over the years. He enjoys helping shearing crews understand the importance of quality wool preparation, ensuring farmers achieve the best returns for their efforts. His grassroots beginnings and comprehensive experience across the industry give him an unparalleled understanding of the wool sector.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lawrence's passion for wool shines through in his outlook on the industry’s future. He firmly believes in the superiority of wool as a natural fibre, championing its environmental and health benefits over synthetic alternatives. Lawrence is optimistic about the next generation’s growing awareness of sustainability, confident that wool will reclaim its place as a cornerstone of New Zealand’s sheep farming economy.

When he’s not working, Lawrence can be found embracing the great outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he has explored the South Pacific and North America, pursuing big game and working toward completing the grand slam of South Pacific hunting. Duck shooting is a cherished tradition, while classic cars and Harleys fuel his love for all things mechanical. Lawrence is also deeply involved in squash, with 37 years of experience as a player and now as a district-level referee. As the President of his local squash club and a board member for Squash Southland, he continues to support his community and his sport.
