  • Meet Doug McKay: A lifelong commitment to wool and community leadership

Doug McKay’s career in the wool industry began at just 17 years old, working for a small private wool merchant. Over time, he worked his way up, eventually managing the business before it was sold to PGW Wool. Since then, Doug has been a well regarded wool rep and, more recently, was appointed National Procurement Manager.

Doug has always been deeply connected to the industry. In 1983, he attended Lincoln University—then known as Lincoln College—where he completed the Certificate in Wool course, laying the groundwork for his lifelong career. He enjoys working with clients during shearing, seeing their wool come into the store, and finalising deals at auction. As an auctioneer—a role he never thought he’d take on—Doug now thrives in this position, bringing confidence and expertise to the rostrum. His commitment to the wool industry is unwavering, as he strives to see wool return to the world stage as a key commodity for New Zealand growers.

Outside of work, Doug is an active community leader, serving as the President of his local rugby club. He and his wife also enjoy caravanning, e-biking, and spending time fishing and diving. With three children and two grandsons, family is at the heart of everything he does.
