  • Meet Tara Marshall – Bringing expertise and education to the wool industry

Tara Marshall’s connection to the wool industry runs deep, shaped by her upbringing on her grandfather’s 1000-hectare farm in Ohura, north of Taumarunui. Her hands-on journey began at 17 when she started working in shearing gangs. After a brief time in Hamilton, Tara returned to the industry in 2006, running her own shearing operation across farms in Taumarunui, Ohura, Matiere, and Ongarue. She gained extensive qualifications in shearing, woolhandling, and pressing, building a solid foundation for her career.

Her dedication extended to competitive shearing and woolhandling, alongside serving as a board member for Shearing Sports New Zealand. Tara is also training as a woolhandling judge, further contributing to the industry by sharing her knowledge and fostering excellence among woolhandlers.

Tara’s career has also taken her to unique locations such as Ida Valley and Cecil Peake, where she immersed herself in fine-wool production and developed expertise in working with merinos. Her determination was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she worked 111 days straight while stuck in Western Australia.

In early 2023, Tara joined PGW as the wool representative for King Country, covering a region that includes parts of Taranaki. The role has allowed her to expand her knowledge of wool and deepen her understanding of farming practices.

Outside work, Tara dedicates her time to her four daughters, aged 7 to 15, often traveling to rugby games where they follow in their family’s footsteps as keen players. Her background, skills, and enthusiasm make Tara a valued member of the PGW Wool team.
