  • Meet Chris Payne: Passionate about people, wool, and the Gisborne region

Chris Payne began his wool career in 1983 with Williams & Kettle in Napier, before completing a Diploma at Massey University in 1987. After spending three years overseas, he returned to New Zealand in 1991, joining the Gisborne branch of Williams & Kettle in a wool representative role. Over the past 34 years, Chris has continued his career in Gisborne through the transitions of Williams & Kettle, Elders, and now PGG Wrightson.

Chris loves the variety that comes with working in the wool industry — being outdoors, visiting different farms, and meeting new people each day. A particular passion of his is working alongside farmers to improve their productivity and profitability, especially through sire ram and ewe hogget replacement selection.

A key strength Chris brings to the team is maintaining strong connections with clients. He prides himself on being available at shearing time and ensuring wool is trucked and delivered promptly to store.

What inspires Chris most is the dedication he sees in New Zealand’s wool growers. “The majority are so passionate about producing an undervalued product, with hope that one day it will actually return to profitability,” he says.

Outside of work, Chris enjoys spending time with his family and growing number of grandchildren. He values good company and moments that make the day a little brighter — often found around the sea or local lakes, “emptying one chilly bin and filling another.”

Contact Chris today to benefit from his experience, strong client connections, and commitment to helping wool growers achieve their best results.
