  • Meet Sam Harmer: Driven by a passion for wool and farming life

Growing up on a high-country sheep and beef station in Mid-Canterbury, running Merino sheep and Angus cattle, Sam Harmer developed a deep-rooted passion for farming and the lifestyle it offers. From a young age, she could be found lending a hand in the wool shed at shearing time or helping out in the drenching races.

Sam’s career began as a shepherd across Mid-Canterbury, where her interest in sheep genetics flourished, particularly in Merino breeding and wool production. With a passion for wool and genetics in mind Sam competed both regionally and nationally in Merino sheep judging for a number of years and enjoys the stud breeder's community. Her enthusiasm for wool, especially fine wool, led her to work as a wool handler for a local contractor, gaining valuable exposure to diverse breeds and wool types. Motivated to deepen her expertise, Sam achieved her Certificate in Wool Technology and classing which she then gained a Merino classing stencil and has been classing in sheds for the past five years.

For Sam, one of the most rewarding aspects of working in the New Zealand wool industry is partnering with farmers who are constantly striving to improve. Helping growers harness genetics to enhance wool production or refine their breeding programmes is both fulfilling and impactful, building strong, trust-based relationships along the way.

Outside of work, Sam breeds her own flock of ultrafine Merinos, continually refining their genetics. She enjoys photography and exploring the hills, and often lends a hand back on the family farm. When she’s not around sheep or out in the high country, you’ll find her on the local squash court, connecting with her community.

Contact Sam today to tap into her expertise in wool, sheep genetics, and her commitment to supporting New Zealand wool growers.
