Peter McCusker
Meet Peter McCusker: A dedicated advocate for wool and sheep genetics
Peter's journey in the wool industry began with Pyne Gould Guinness, where he completed his Certificate in Wool and Diploma in Wool Technology at Lincoln University. His early career saw him managing the reclass department, after which he became PGW's first full-time Wool Representative in the field. Over the years, Peter has honed his expertise in sheep genetics and ram breeding, working closely with clients to improve wool quality and production.
Peter is passionate about working with a product that has been integral to human civilisation for thousands of years. In today’s world, he believes wool is more relevant than ever as society moves toward natural fibers and away from oil-based synthetics. This deep respect for wool drives his dedication to supporting New Zealand’s wool growers, whom he considers the best in the world. Their dedication and passion inspire him to ensure their wool achieves its greatest potential in the market.
Specialising in fine-wool genetics and wool characteristics, Peter often shares his knowledge with colleagues and students, helping others develop their understanding of the craft.
Outside of work, Peter has a wide range of interests that keep him active. From running and Pilates to landscape photography and woodwork, he enjoys spending time outdoors and creating with his hands. Gardening is another passion, and his family life with his wife, Katherine, and their two daughters brings him immense joy and fulfilment.
With decades of experience and a dedication to supporting New Zealand’s wool growers, Peter is passionate about helping wool thrive for generations to come.
