Proven hill country genetics enhancing Waewaepa Station productivity

First time on-farm sale at renowned Tararua district property with large offering of Angus steers, Romney ewes, and Romney, Hampshire Downs and Dorset Downs lambs.

With hardy hill country genetics, proven on the limestone of one of the Tararua district’s most admired farms, Waewaepa Station’s first ever On-Farm Sheep and Steer Sale on 14 January will be a big drawcard for local farmers, as well as others from further and wider afield.

Waewaepa Station manager Tim Stevenson is looking forward to putting up big lines of quality steers, ewes and lambs at the sale.

“With our stock, we look to the maternal side for quick growth in our testing environment, progeny that grow out quickly. We know that if sheep or cattle thrive on these hills, they will do well elsewhere.”

A genetics strategy honed and delivered in consultation with PGG Wrightson’s Tom Suttor, Waewaepa Station sources Romney rams from Angus Cameron of Ngāputahi Station, and bulls mainly from Grampians Angus in North Canterbury, along with others from Meadowslea Angus of Fairlie.

“We follow a philosophy that structure comes first, that the animal must function in the real world, backed up by good data. That approach is particularly important in the Waewaepa Station’s challenging hill country. Tim has a big input in the genetic direction, and we assist him with the options to achieve that outcome. The results he achieves with his steers, ewes and lambs speak for themselves. These stock will do well on transfer to other properties,” says Tom.

Waewaepa Station stock also boast a strong drench history.

Bjorn Andersen, PGG Wrightson Area Livestock Manager for Dannevirke and Pahiatua takes care of the commercial side of Waewaepa Station’s business.

Waewaepa Station carries approximately 28,000 stock units on 3200 hectares effective, ranging from 270 to 850 metres above sea level. Regular customers at the station’s January sale are mainly drawn from Wairarapa, Manawatu, and Central Hawke’s Bay.

Sale offerings will include 150 15 month Angus steers, 2000 Romney two tooth ewes, 3500 undrafted Romney lambs, and 2500 undrafted Hampshire Downs and Dorset Downs lambs.
