Prime Minister backs Innovative Rural Thinking

Prime Minister John Key, in conjunction with The Robin Hood Foundation has been searching for business minds leading the way in innovative thinking around social issues.

This quest has led them to a number of organizations that have created meaningful partnerships in the social sector. PGG Wrightson and IHC selected as the Supreme Winner of the Robin Hood Prime Minister’s Social Heroes Award 2009 for their 25 year relationship.

More than $20 million has been raised through the PGW IHC Calf Scheme, through the generosity of farmers, making a real difference to over 45,000 people living with intellectual disabilities and their families in rural communities.

The scheme has recently been expanded to include all livestock, so farmers can now donate the proceeds of any animal at all PGG Wrightson livestock sales nationwide.

“By using our national livestock network as a vehicle to support IHC, farmers have the opportunity at the time of sale to choose to give the proceeds of one or more of their animals to IHC,” says Sponsorship Coordinator Hazel Barrer.

PGG Wrightson livestock agents are right behind the Calf & Rural Scheme, and go the extra mile to ensure livestock donated to the Scheme’s fetch a good price. “When farmers respond generously by giving the proceeds of one of their animals to IHC, we make it as simple as possible by managing the paperwork involved and ensuring all proceeds go right back to people living in the donor’s local rural community.”

IHC 25th Birthday

Recipients, donors, celebrities and staff gathered in Cambridge on Wednesday 20th May to celebrate 25 years of the PGG Wrightson IHC Calf Scheme.  Even the calves got their own slice of cake.

25 years is a long time – quarter of a century – so it is easy to say that a 25-year sponsorship relationship between IHC and PGG Wrightson is a success story. The winning formula seems to be the passion that is shared by those close to the scheme. Starting from the top (height wise), patron Colin Meads has been involved from the beginning. His typically kiwi ‘humble celebrity status’ sits firmly alongside the scheme. Couple this with loyal canvassars, proud Livestock reps, and the generosity of hundreds of dairy farmers – and there’s no doubt this scheme has touched the hearts of many.

PGW IHC Rural Scheme

The PGG Wrightson IHC Rural Scheme involves farmers, PGG Wrightson and IHC working together to raise money for New Zealanders who have an intellectual disability. Launched in 1984, as the PGG Wrightson IHC Calf Scheme - this project has contributed enormously to the IHC. The Scheme now raises more than $1,000,000 each year. In 2008, the scheme was expanded to include ALL Livestock.

Why are we involved?

PGG Wrightson are proud to be part of such a long-lasting sponsorship relationship. Money that is raised within a community, stays in that community to assist people living with disabilities. THANK YOU to all farmers who have donated to the ‘PGG Wrightson IHC Calf Scheme’ over the last 25 years – together we have raised over 20million dollars. Here’s to a bright future for people living with intellectual disabilities in your community!

How to Donate?

If you'd like to jump on board with us and sponsor the PGW IHC Rural Scheme, please phone 0800 746 444 or talk to your local Livestock Representative.
