Carl Hayman Endorses PGG Wrightson Turf

Carl Hayman, All Black tight head prop, is the new face of PGG Wrightson Turf endorsing New Zealand bred turf grasses. Carl, who has an intensive campaign ahead of him leading into this years Rugby World Cup in France, has come on board to endorse PGG Wrightson Turf grass cultivars and products currently used in most of New Zealand and Australia’s major sporting venues. Carl believes that the game of rugby starts up front and that the grasses bred from the engine room of the PGG Wrightson Turf research program are the best he has played on in the world.

“With a scrum weighing over 2 tonne, together with multiple sets of sprigs ripping into the turf surface, it’s critical the grass and surface holds up to the impact” says Carl.  “The stability of the surface and turf at scrum time is critical, as it’s the launching pad to let those flashy backs do their stuff”.

"I regularly use the Milliken Stadium Program with CPR.  The results we get are a tougher turf surface, a long lasting natural emerald green colour, and most noticeably, much less disease pressure."

"I use the Milliken Stadium program year round in conjunction with quarterly applications of granular feeding.  I have found this foliar program helps me greatly over the winter, when conditions are particularly harsh (cold temperatures, stadium shade and more brutal play).  For much of the 2007 winter the program has been my only feed source for turf nutrition, colour and strength.

The Milliken Stadium foliar program consists of three-weekly applications of CPR, Fairway SeaQuential and Fairway 30-0-0 (I increase the 30-0-0 when nutrition levels look low).  To this I add a game preparation mix of True Foliar MgMn and Si about 3 - 5 days before a game, to assist with turf colour and strength.

I like the fact that you can mix fungicides with this range, and I have found this to give me the best natural colour; not the black iron-colour you often associate with iron applications.  It almost totally stops the incidence of etioliation (we call this Mad Tiller disease) and there are no flushes of growth;  just a consistent steady rate, which makes the turf surface look very even.  The root growth assists in surface stability and disease control, and when we add the game prep products the turf strength and wear are noticeable improved."
