Ballance Farm Environment Awards

The Ballance Farm Environment Awards are held in eight regions throughout New Zealand, including: Waikato, Canterbury, Bay of Plenty, Wellington, Southland, Otago, Northland and Horizons. The key objective of the Awards is to encourage sustainable land management and to display to farmers that profitability can be balanced with environmental concerns.

PGG Wrightson National Shearing Round

The PGG Wrightson National Shearing round has competitions around the country between October and March 2010/2011 with the final being held at the Golden Shears in March.

  • National Corriedale championships; 10-12 November 2010, Christchurch

Ahuwhenua Trophy

The Ahuwhenua Trophy – BNZ Maori Excellence in Farming Award acknowledges and celebrates business excellence in New Zealand’s important pastoral sector.  This competition is held annually, alternating each year between dairy and sheep & beef.

The 2010 competition showcases achievement in the Maori dairy sector – in particular, successful approaches to governance, financing, management, innovation, environmental management and the recognition of nga tikanga Maori.

Air New Zealand Wine Awards

The Air New Zealand Wine Awards is the premier wine competition in New Zealand recognising excellence in winemaking. The competition is owned and organised by New Zealand Winegrowers, the national organisation for the country’s 1,300 grape growers and winemakers. The competition has been running for close to 30 years and Air New Zealand has been the naming rights sponsor for the majority of that time.

Young Horticulturalist of the Year

Organised by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture Education Trust and the New Zealand Horticulture Industry Training Organisation (NZHITO), the Young Horticulturist of the Year aims to inspire and acknowledge the talents of young people employed in the horticultural industry.

The competition embraces all aspects of the horticultural industry with finalists drawn from arboriculture, fruit growing, grape growing, nursery, vegetable growing, landscaping, cut flowers, floristry and turf sectors.

Silver Secateurs

The national Silver Secateurs Grape Vine Pruning Competition recognises grapevine pruning as vine management practice integral to the production of quality wines.

The competition recognises the skills of grapevine pruning teams around New Zealand and helps encourage a high standard of grapevine pruning. Regional competitions see entrants compete in three categories: individual pruning, individual tying and a teams’ event. The winners of the regional competitions come together to contest the Silver Secateurs final.

Woodhill Sands is a premier equestrian centre located north of Kumeu.
